 How Death Came To Be

In the beginning, God made man in his image and after his likeness; and he gave him rulership over all of creation. God and man were connected by life, which was freely given. Man was created to be a living soul – eternal – never dying. God’s plan was that man was to know only good, and was to walk in fellowship with God. God did not want man to even know about evil, thus the commandment that he was not to take of The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

When this commandment was disobeyed, it was sin, which then caused death to enter in. Sin caused death. Man was cut off from God and from life. God had to cast him out of the Garden so that he would not partake of the Tree of Life. Now that man knew both good and evil, he was faced with choosing between the two. That life, which was once freely given, must now be regained through man’s own efforts – he must overcome sin and choose only good.

One Plan, His Image
One Plan, His Image

The plan from the beginning was for man to be formed and created and in God’s image, knowing nothing but the goodness of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Genesis 1:26-27 – And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

God And Man, One
GOD and Man, One

Man was one with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
They were all connected by life, freely given.

Genesis 2:7 – And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Man Knew Only Good: Rule and Reign, On Earth
Man Knew Only Good
Rule and Reign, On Earth

God’s plan was that man would know only good, and would walk, rule and reign on this earth and have dominion over it.

Genesis 1:28 – And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Genesis 1:31 – And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Disobedience Brings Death
Disobedience Brings Death

God commanded Adam that he could have anything and everything in the garden, but not to partake of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, for in the day that he does, he shall die.

Genesis 2:15-17 – And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Know Evil - Become Evil
Know Evil – Become EVIL

God didn’t want man to have that understanding of good and evil, but when Adam partook of the tree, he was then subject to evil.

Genesis 3:6-7 – And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Genesis 3:22 – And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Disobedience IS Sin
Disobedience Is Sin

All disobedience is sin, and sin severs you from God.

I John 3:4 – Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Isaiah 59:2 – But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Genesis 3:23-24 – Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Sin Causes Death
Sin Causes Death

God is all about life, but death entered in because of sin.

Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

James 1:15 – Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Romans 5:21 – That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Adam Sins, No Life
Adam Sins, No Life

God was happy with what he created. There was no death until Adam sinned and life was cut off.

Genesis 1:31 – And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Genesis 3:6 – And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Romans 5:12 – Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

No Sin, Obtain Life
No Sin, Obtain Life

God set up a barrier to the tree of life, but there is still a promise of obtaining it if we overcome sin in our lives.

Genesis 3:24 – So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Revelation 2:7 – He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Choose - Good or Evil
CHOOSE – Good Or Evil

Man now has to make a choice between good and evil.

Amos 5:14-15 – Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Psalm 34:12-16 – What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

Romans 12:9 – Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

I Peter 3:10-11 – For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 – See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
